There’s a point in our lives where we tend to compare our progress with others- we look at our neighbor’s progress and wonder what went wrong with us.
Sometimes, it’s not intentional but we allow our situations to make us question if we were all created the same and if success is for specific people.
Though there are physical features such as your fingerprint, appearance, etc. which make us distinct people, what makes us successful is common to every human. Nobody was created with specific traits and abilities to be poor or rich, excel or fail. At least the Scriptures confirm that we are God’s masterpiece, His best work of art and it has been in the Bible for generations as an eternal reminder so we do not live below standard.
When I was invited by Scripture Union Ghana, Tema – Ada Area to speak to Senior High School graduates on ‘Living a Purposeful Life; My Mission and Vision’, I decided to first introduce them to themselves, to put the focus on who they are and can be, and demystify the comparison threat while igniting the flame in them to be the best. I shared with them 5 Fundamental Things Common to Everyone
This is what makes every human relevant on earth and a necessary part of the world that cannot be ignored. The one who sells by the roadside, the millionaire who drives the most expensive car, the student preparing for exams, and the poor man thinking of what to eat tonight, all share one important thing in common- and that’s purpose. Everyone on this planet was born with and for a purpose. We are here for a unique reason for which the world is incomplete without and it is our responsibility to discover it.
The successful person you admire was never born a success, success is not genetic or hereditary. Most of what we see and envy or admire are end products of people discovering and living their purpose. Purpose is common to all and it’s the foundation upon which life is built. Find yours, live it and you wouldn’t need to compare yourself with others. You are the right person for earth, now prove it- unleash your purpose.
No two people are the same even in their callings and gifts. You were created to be different so dare to be different. It is our difference that serves the world not our similarities to each other. The ability to do something no one has ever done and excel in it is common to everyone, it is never a privilege of a few. “Why am I so different?” should never be a question to worry about, it is a necessity for greatness, work with it. Living a purposeful life will require you know, understand, and appreciate your difference and live it. Appreciate that you are not and cannot be like someone and become a better you.
Proverbs 18:16 says, “A man’s gift opens doors for him, and brings him before great men.” The good news is that God has put a gift or talent in every person that the world will make room for. Pick anybody from the street, any home, any background or any part of the world, give them time and the needed training and their gift will make them stand out.
What you were designed to be known for is your gift. You don’t realize that the gift you’re sitting on is loaded. The world won’t move over for you just because you’re smart. However, when you exercise your gift, not only will the world make room for you, but it will also pay you for it.
Never use your educational background as an excuse not to attempt something great because education is not the key to success, it is in exercising your gift. Do what you were born to do, because that is where you will make your money. No matter how big the world is, there’s a place for you in it when you discover and manifest your gift.
- A God Available to All
There’s no sin too grievous for God to forgive, no location to far for God to reach, no destiny too obscure for God’s light to shine upon, no mind too dumb for God to excel with, no situation so hopeless for God to change, no life too bad for the love of God, and no home too poor for God’s riches in glory to supply.
None of us is off God’s radar including those who don’t believe in Him. The same grace for the rich man is available in abundance to the poor man. The Bible says WHOSOEVER shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved (Romans 10:13). God continues to assure us that if we ask anything in the name of Jesus, He will answer and provide (Matthew 18:13). If there are people willing to ask, there is a God always ready to answer. If you are reading this and you don’t know Jesus or haven’t given your life to Him, I advise you to do so, get to know Jesus.
If there is anything God shared in equal measure for all, it is time- there is 24 hours for everybody. No one gets extra time because of family background, nature of work, or physical features they possess. Your life is made up of time, every time you waste is a wasted part of your life. What you do with your time determines how successful you will be. Every successful person is an evidence of skillful and wise use of time not privileges they had. Everything, from fulfilling your vision and purpose to making any relevant impact is hinged on time, be careful what steals your time in the name of pleasure and comfort.
With these 5 things common to all, I made the graduates understand that though opportunities might not be equal for all, the foundation for success is available and common to all and it will only take the wise and diligent to use it to their advantage. When these are properly understood, we pursue our purpose without excuses.
Living a purposeful life is a personal assignment and comparing yourself to others doesn’t get it done faster- it is an abnormal use of energy.
Never make excuses for staying ordinary and in poverty. Even if you were born with a silver spoon in your mouth, if you don’t use these fundamental things common to everyone properly, you will be unsuccessful.
